Gracie Barra Westside New Mexico provides structured instruction in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) in the Albuquerque area. Maintaining a proper training environment is essential for safety, effective learning, and a positive atmosphere for all students.
Adherence to established conduct standards ensures a functional and respectful space.
Mat and facility guidelines!
All individuals must clean their feet before stepping onto the training mats. Footwear is prohibited on the mats at all times. When not on the mat, students should wear appropriate footwear, such as sandals or clean athletic shoes, especially when using the restroom or walking off the mat area. The training area should remain clear of personal items; bags and water bottles should be stored neatly in designated zones. It is important to leave the facility premises and changing areas clean after use.

Hygiene and uniform requirements!
Personal hygiene is a requirement. The training uniform, known as the Gi, must be clean and free of excessive wear or odors for every training session. Finger nails and toe nails must be trimmed short to prevent accidental scratches or injuries to training partners. The complete Gracie Barra uniform, including a clean rash guard underneath the Gi jacket, must be worn during BJJ classes. Jewelry, including rings, necklaces, and earrings, must be removed before training to prevent injury to the wearer and partners.
Conduct during instruction and training!
Punctuality is necessary; students should arrive on time for scheduled classes. If a student is late, they must wait for recognition from the instructor before joining the class activities. During instruction, students must maintain focus and refrain from talking. When training with partners, clear communication regarding injuries, technique limitations, or needed breaks is essential. Students should only use techniques demonstrated by the instructor during the class session. If a student needs to temporarily leave the mat, they should first obtain the instructor’s permission.
Interaction with instructors and peers!
Respect for all instructors and training partners is fundamental to the Gracie Barra Westside culture. This includes following instructions immediately and maintaining a positive attitude. Higher-level belts should receive due deference, and lower-level belts should be treated with support. Any concerns regarding training, injuries, or other matters should be communicated directly and appropriately to an instructor or staff member. Constructive feedback should be provided only when requested and always in a respectful manner.
